POSITION OVERVIEW

Working under the direct supervision of the Program Director, Day Camp Counselor will assist with supervision to program participants. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with participants, while building cooperative relationships with participant families. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assists the Program Director/ Lead Day Camp Counselor in the implementation of the daily program activities.
  • Assists in the planning and preparation of the creative learning environment, and preparation of needed materials and supplies.
  • Treats each participant and participant families with dignity and respect; maintains a professional attituded with participants, participant families and co-workers.
  • Maintains YMCA discipline policy in the guidance of the children.
  • Attend all staff meeting and training programs as required.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with program participants, participant families and co-workers.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Maintains an overall perspective on the needs of the participants.
  • Discuss concerns, suggestions, changes, and personal needs with Program Director.
  • Wears staff shirt daily with appropriate pants, shorts, skirts, and closed toes shoes.
  • Assist with schoolwork as needed for program participants
  • Physical ability to lead and supervise active sports and games with participants
  • Ability to relate well with both children and adults
  • Leadership – Maintain a positive, upbeat role, promote, and exemplify Company values and represents departmental objectives and interests to internal and external customers
  • Customer Service – Follow up on complaints, questions, and concerns; respond to internal/external customer needs in a friendly, timely and efficient manner
  • Teamwork - Develop and promote teamwork and cooperation among co-workers
  • Safety – Comply with established safe work practices and attend to all safety-related training provided or made available by the Company.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • 1 year of experience working with children preferred.

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred

Required Technical / Other Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to pass live scan through DOJ and FBI and pass TB screening prior to employment

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office products)

  • Read, write, and speak fluent English

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is a plus

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Child Abuse Prevention training required within 15 days of employment

  • CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred

  • Mandate Reporter training required within 7 day of employment
